About Gangotri
Gangotri Dham, the origin of the holy river Ganga, is situated at an altitude of 3,100m in Uttarkashi district. The Gangotri temple, built by Gorkha General Amar Singh Thapa in the 18th century, is dedicated to Goddess Ganga. The actual source, Gaumukh, lies 18 km upstream.
